A National Bilingual Digital Heritage Commemoration

Exploring the moments that have shaped Canada since Confederation — and continue to shape who we are becoming.

FRANÇAIS

A Country Still Becoming

Exploring the moments that have shaped Canada — and the evolving story still being written.

Canada’s story did not end at Confederation. Since 1867, the country has continued to evolve — shaped by people, communities, ideas, challenges and moments of profound change.

Becoming Canadian invites Canadians to reflect on that ongoing process through 160 defining moments from 1867 to 2027. Together, these moments will offer an opportunity to explore where we have been, how we have changed, and what our shared histories can tell us about the country we are still becoming.

Developed as a national bilingual digital heritage commemoration, the project is designed to bring Canadian history to life through multiple perspectives, meaningful questions and stories from communities across the country.

160 defining moments. Many perspectives. One evolving Canadian story.

Discover Becoming Canadian

What does it mean to be Canadian — and how has that meaning changed over time?

Becoming Canadian will invite people across the country to explore the moments, stories and perspectives that have shaped Canada since Confederation and continue to influence the country we are becoming today.

160 Defining Moments

Sixteen themes. 160 moments. One evolving Canadian story.

At the heart of Becoming Canadian will be a curated collection of 160 defining moments spanning Canada’s history from Confederation to 2027.

These moments will be explored across 16 broad themes in Canadian history, with approximately ten moments drawn from each. Together, they will illuminate the people, ideas, achievements, challenges and turning points that have contributed to Canada’s continuing process of becoming.

The final selection will be shaped through a broad multidisciplinary consultation process and guided by CanHist’s Curatorial Thinking framework and the 11 Guiding Principles for Learning with a Two-Eyed Seeing approach.

The consultation will seek a wide range of perspectives, including those of Indigenous peoples, youth, women, educators, scholars and professionals from across Canada, helping ensure that multiple perspectives and experiences are considered throughout the process.

Each moment offers another lens through which to understand Canada’s past — and what it is still becoming.

A National Digital Story

Bringing 160 defining moments together through stories, places and perspectives from across Canada.

At the centre of Becoming Canadian will be a national bilingual digital StoryMap — an interactive experience bringing together the 160 defining moments through stories, images, geography and digital storytelling.

Rather than simply presenting a timeline of Canadian history, the StoryMap will help visitors explore how defining moments connect to people, places and communities across the country, revealing both familiar stories and perspectives that have too often gone unheard.

Using innovative GIS and StoryMapping tools, the project will create opportunities for Canadians to explore history in new ways — connecting stories to place, encouraging inquiry and helping learners see how local experiences contribute to the broader national story.

Educators and learners will also have access to free digital tools and training, creating opportunities to develop StoryMaps of their own and give greater visibility to student voice and local stories.

Explore the moments. Discover the stories. See where they happened.

Questions That Guide the Story

The 160 defining moments will do more than tell us what happened. They will invite Canadians to think critically about why these moments matter, how they changed the country, and what they reveal about Canada’s continuing process of becoming.

Question 1

How have these defining moments in our shared histories reflected the core Canadian principles established at the time of Confederation: “Peace, Order and Good Government”?

Question 2

How do these defining moments reflect Canada’s evolving journey toward national sovereignty?

Question 3

How do these defining moments invite Canadians to reflect on what Canada is becoming, while also confronting and learning from the past?

Question 4

In what ways do these defining moments demonstrate significant change among Canadian communities?

Question 5

Although some defining moments had their greatest impact in particular regions, how do they also reveal stories of national significance?

Because understanding Canada’s story begins with asking better questions.

The Road to 2028

Becoming Canadian is planned as a year-long national commemoration beginning in 2027 and culminating in the national release of the bilingual digital StoryMap in 2028.

National promotion and outreach begin, followed by stakeholder consultation and the development of criteria to help identify Canada’s defining moments.

Research, shortlisting and curation of the 160 defining moments take place, alongside the launch of the bilingual project website and development of the national digital StoryMap.

Learning resources are released, StoryMap development and testing continue, and opportunities for Canadians to engage with and contribute to the project begin.

The Becoming Canadian StoryMap is released nationally, followed by continued promotion and engagement across Canada through March 2028.

From consultation and curation to a national digital story — building toward 2028.

Canada’s story is still becoming.

Becoming Canadian will invite people across the country to explore the moments, stories and perspectives that have shaped Canada — and to consider how our shared histories continue to influence who we are today.

As the project develops, new stories, learning opportunities and ways to participate will be shared.

The journey begins in 2027.
